Auto dimming rear view mirror switch broken

The auto dimming switch is broken on the mirror in my 2001. Can I use a later 02+ mirror with homelink or only the autodim only mirrors? These have a different type of switch that might be more robust. Is there any issue of different wiring harnesses in different years?
Any ideas for fixing the broken switch? It's a clicker type switch like a ballpoint pen. The switch moves up, but no longer catches. I've temporarily tried rubber bands. That setup can be finicky. Perhaps I can wedge something in there to hold the switch up. I'd rather not epoxy the switch up in case I need to disable auto dimming at some point.
Can the ball joint on the mirror be tightened?
