You don't really want to take a constant 12V source for the mirror with the compass. It's not a lot of current, but if you let the car sit for days, your battery will go flat from it.
AFAIK, only the very early cars did not have a connector for the autodim mirror. Those kits came with the parts needed to tap into the wiring in the overhead. Properly wired, your mirror is actually still "live" until DICE cuts the power to the interior lights 20 minutes after you shut off the car.
For 2000 and later, they all should have the wiring (though who knows from 2006 on...). These are wired somewhat differently, as they supplied an ignition switched source of +12v to the connector.
So, a car that does not have the factory wired connector(usually 98s and early 99s), can operate the HomeLink after the car is switched off and key removed. A 2000- or any car that had the factory wired connector can not. The mirror is "dead" when the ignition goes off.
In 2003, Saab threw a curve ball. From 2003, the side mirrors were available with autodim as well as the interior mirror. All the "brains" were still inside the interior mirror. But to accommodate the inside mirror now outputting current to dim the door mirrors, they reversed the gender of the connector in the overhead! Late mirror kits came with a short "gender-bender" cable that allowed the late mirror to be used in earlier cars. As far as I know, all of the HomeLink mirrors are the late style.
