Spoke with Matt Moran, the (new) proprietor of said site. He swears up, down, left and right that the PPS ($200) unit is a sturdy, reliable replacement for the real deal, experience here notwithstanding. It is not a reverse engineered product - they've cut a couple apart and the SEM (real Saab) DIC has different stuff in it.
One downside to the less expensive unit is the real article fails gracefully enough that it usually triggers a code while there's still enough life left to get home (I can vouch for Columbus, Ohio to Canton, Ohio under a code alert). The PPS - again, according to Matt - you will try to start the car and it won't.
IME, you can pretty well count on 50,000 from the OE DIC - my first one Saab replaced during the recall program at 45,000 - it was working fine at the time. (note that the MY 2002 car had the MY 2003 software installed shortly after I bought it). I had already purchased a circa MY 2003 spare before the recall, so I had that one installed and rotated the newest unit into the basement. The second one threw a code at around 100,000 miles. Therefore, I would recommend a spare when the one in the car gets to 40,000 or so - certainly the PPS unit would be great for that purpose.
