Thanks to help and advice from several at this site, we finally decided and picked up our new Imola red, 2000, 2.3 LPT (5sp, leather, heated seats)last weekend. LOVE the car, despite at least 2 obvious defects (rear seat heaters inoperative; ditto door locking switch on console) -- I'll have them attended too at the 1000 mi check.
Compared to my perfectly maintained previous car, a '97 Acura CL (2.2 4 cyl with 5sp - this is essentially a 'delux' Accord coupe), I can offer the following (surprising?) observations:
The 9-5's clutch is noticably more tractable and the gear shifting in general is better in the 9-5 due to a shorter lever throw, closer lever, and more clearly defined gear 'slots'. Also the Acura/Honda gear box is quite stiff in nearly freezing weather, the 9-5's is smooth as silk. Given Honda's reputation for gear changing (and my years previous SAAB 99's behavior) this surprised me. Moreover, the 9-5's engine is both smoother and less 'harsh' than the virtualy same sized Honda 4 (a 2.2). I guess the balance shafts are to thank for that. A less easy to define trait is that while the Acura handled well and is virtually the same size as the 9-5 (except for being quite a bit lower); the 9-5 seems to shrink around me as I drive -- giving a steering and handling experience that seems more integrated. My wife feels that it is easier to drive than the old Acura.
And, we LOVE the heated seats!
