Sounds like the clutch is not disengaging completely when the peddle is pushed down. Could be the clutch master cylinder seals are bad or the slave cylinder in the trans. Check the fluid reservoir- if its low on fluid the system is leaking and not holding pressure. Pump the pedal a few times before putting it in gear and see if it engages without a clunk. I have an auto in my Saab but I assume the manual must be a hydraulic driven clutch.
