I don't know at what point a p1312 sets the CEL but it will eventually. I suspect that it is based on "x" occurrences of the code withing "y" number of hours/days/system starts.
FYI from the "crazy experiments department": I have been driving one of my Aero's with a failing IDM as an experiment to see how far it will go before total failure (I carry a spare). The CEL comes on ~once a week. When it does I check the code (to verify its still the IDM) and clear it. It has been over 15k miles now.
I think that those of us who survived the "dark days of the IDM" with a 9000 and early 9-5 are accustomed to sudden failure with no warning. Now with the improved hardware and and software it seems we get decent warning.
Note I am not recommending that anyone else do this! I'd say order a new IDM from eeuroparts but don't sweat the overnight shipping.
