Once they start corroding the surfaces are no longer smooth and do not seal well. A little leak will accelerate corrosion again and quickly increase the leak - so it is important not to start small leaks in the first place - e.g. by using a very thin coating of automotive grade silicone sealant during installation.
I have been using this technique for 10+ years on all kinds of coolant connections (hoses, o-rings, gaskets) and never had a leak.
Rubber to plastic contacts usually age better as there is no corrosion - no particular need for sealant on those surfaces, just cleaning.
Breaking "sealed" connections requires a little more effort than usual but nothing major. Silicone sealant is usually easy to clean off and reapply when a connection has to be redone.
