Been a while since I posted here, but I had an experience with my '08 Aero that impressed me this week. Wednesday evening, while cruising I-40 in Arizona at 80 MPH, the tire pressure warning for the left front tire lit up (along with the chime). I knew this wasn't good as the tires were warm and I had been going up in altitude, so I likely had a problem. As I was contemplating this, about 15 seconds after the warning, another message appeared which read "pull over safely" if I remember correctly. Over the years I've seen the pressure warning come up numerous times (especially at the onset of cold weather) but never "pull over safely". It took a minute or so to find a spot with a good size shoulder to pull off on, and when I got out to look, it was clear the tire was going down. I made the decision, rightly now as I look back, to proceed at about 50 MPH another two miles or so to an exit with a large Pilot truck stop. I really didn't want to be stuck in a remote and dark place with a flat, and I knew the Pilot center was reasonably close. I'm certain the last 300 yards of driving were on a completely flat tire, but I slowed considerably more and did no damage to the car or rim. The pull over message must be keyed to a rapid loss of pressure or something similar, because it was new to me. Impressive.
On a related topic, the next day I had the car towed on a flat-bed to Discount Tire in Flagstaff (I wasn't going to run on an Interstate with the donut spare). I was close to needing new tires anyway, so I went with a set of Yokohamas, model YK580, 235/45-17. I didn't have time to have them order in a set of Continentals or Michelins, which I thought I preferred. So far, very impressed with the new tires - smooth, exceptionally quiet, and little tendency to follow road grooves. Conclusion at the moment is that tires are getting better and better no matter who the manufacturer is. Cornering may or may not be improved, but I do so much highway driving it doesn't matter to me. 148K miles on the car BTW, and it's holding up beautifully.
Happy Easter everyone.
