Inspired by a thread a few days ago. Saab recommends replacing the cabin air filter every 30k. The procedure is fairly labor intensive and is not cheap on parts either. The problem is the lifetime of the filter is likely to be very dependent on the area where you live - so often the filter is replaced when it is not really necessary (e.g. the filters that I replace look mostly clean).
So why not replace the filter only when needed? A $11 anemometer from Amazon (ASIN: B007VAVTHU) can precisely measure the airflow through the filter - say by measuring the air speed at a certain vent at maximum fan setting. So take one measurement when the filter is new and then replace it only when it drop by say ~30%? Problem solved!.
I am placing my anemometer order today. Btw, this model also measures air temperature so it can be used for AC diagnostics.
