Me too, I was told it's "normal" and was shown a Saab (internal) technical bulletin which discusses the smoke is from the fuel, but it said *black* smoke, not blue/white. According to my indy mechanic (a sponsor of Saabnet) black smoke is fuel, blue/white is either oil or antifreeze. I brought the car in twice for the smoke (25K miles), finally I called SaabUSA, wrote to the owner of the dealership, the gen. manager of the dealership, and to SaabUSA. I heard immediately from both the owner of the dealership and the gen. mgr (but curiously not from SaabUSA). Well, today I'm picking the car up after a turbo replacement. I don't know if that was the problem, I'll have to post after driving it for a few days. Good luck with your problem, keep after them and you'll get some response (esp. with only a few miles of warranty left, I'd make sure to get it in and the smoking documented in their system). Regarding your mechanic being a straight shooter, he probably still is, since the bulletin that I was shown emphasized that the smoke (black) was normal and that turbo replacement would *not* (Saabs emphasis) be covered under warranty. He may feel his hands are tied by Saab. Help him out by telling him upfront you are going over him in the Saab chain and good luck. I'll let you know how the turbo replacement went after a bit (I hope that was indeed the problem!!)
