There should be caps on the service ports that incorporate an o-ring or flat seal. The caps are supposed to seal anything that gets past the schrader valves, which frequently don't seal 100% effectively. You should be able to replace the caps without discharging the system unless the shrader valves are in really, really bad shape.
If the schrader valves are very leaky they should be replaced, but you need to evacuate and recharge the system in order to do this.
