My first Sx was knocking under boost. The way it was explained to me by a Saab Tech was I needed a new MAF and a new Brake Booster as it was leaking vacuum. Since it's hooked directly to the intake manifold, it was causing the car to run lean and knock under boost. This could eventually destroy the pistons. It didn't make sense to me until he said the booster can fail a couple ways. If it leaks internally (I think), the brakes will get real hard. If it leaks externally, it will produce the hiss. Either way, it needs to be replaced.
I mentioned I didn't think I had a braking issue until I replaced the booster. The brakes worked better with he new booster, but it wasn't night and day.
Hope that helps.
