coolant disappeared ... and then returned Posted by bobc [Email] (#473) [Profile/Gallery] (more from bobc) on Thu, 11 Sep 2014 10:39:19 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Im a little stumped by this and hoping to get some help and insight.
A few days ago driving home (~70 miles into a 150 mile trip, mixed highway and by-way) the "Low Coolant" message appeared on the SID. At that time the temp began to rise slowly (I have the deadband disabled on my temp gauge so it reads actual temps)
I pulled over to inspect and found no leaks. Coolant bypass valve was dry. rad hoses were dry, heater hoses all dry. I shrug and get a jug of coolant from the trunk.
When I open the reservoir cap, coolant bubbles and slowly *fills the reservoir back to full line*. I added no coolant, tightened the cap and went on my way. no incidents since.
I cant get my head around where the coolant went! and why would it come back when the pressure was released.
as I was contemplated the loss of coolant (before it returned that is) I considered:
- a subtle Coolant bypass valve leak. Too small to see.
- a failing headgasket. leaking coolant into the combustion chamber
- failing thermostat stuck closed
but for #1 and 2 the coolant would not come back, it would have leaked out.
for #3 I have not seen a thermostat fail in the "stuck closed" position in years, and although its possible I still cant see how the coolant would come back once pressure was released.
what am I missing here?
