I've done quite a few and never had to use a separator of any kind on a 9-5. (I hear you though, I definitely struggled on every 900).
Forgive this poor explanation, but the ball joint on the 9-5 is captured in the spindle with a "clamp" arrangement. you loosen that bolt and it releases the clamping force. And then the ball joint is easily tapped out.
