SRS Airbag Light - Fault Fixed For Now Posted by Dave the Ice Age Knave [Email] (#2068) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Dave the Ice Age Knave) on Sat, 27 Dec 2014 21:31:46 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Seems the fault has now been fixed. For posterity, 2004 Saab 9-5 Arc - 190,000km was plagued by an intermittent SRS Airbag light over several months that eventually went steady on. Finally fixed by replacing the front right crash sensor part 12759383 with new sensor 12772218. Scanty guidance on the internet but I disconnected battery for at least 15 minutes (-ve first then +ve lead). Removed the right and left front bumper grilles by pushing the bottom up and out. Removed centre grille in a similar way but I think I helped things along by sticking my hand in behind the centre grille. The sensor is held on by two nuts. I removed both nuts and removed the connector - all straightforward. I then connected and bolted down the new sensor. Replaced +ve battery terminal then -ve terminal. In the event the airbags went off, I started the car from behind the passenger seat with safety shield and earmuffs on (in case bags deployed for ????? reason). SRS Airbag light and centre warning light immediately extinguished for the first time in a long time. Fait accompli! Note - In order to avoid replacing parts unnecessarily, previously had a Saab mechanic read code(s) for me. Fault code(s) indicated may have been front sensor, wiring or SRS module issue but I was hoping the fix from that one internet post (front sensor replacement) would work. Lesson's I think I learned from this project: cleaning front crash sensors may not work. Old sensor superseded by new part. Front sensors do not have to be replaced in pairs but probably is advisable due to age. Tech II not required to extinguish light - trouble lights go off immediately like magic. I may go out on a limb and postulate that front sensors are more troublesome then wiring or SRS module.
