This is interesting because I think my indy finds the og9-3's tend to have more troubles. The 9-5 is definitely a more solid feeling car, but I like the og9-3 almost as much.
9-5 suspension wear can be an issue if it was loaded, however it handles much better than the og9-3. Check ride height (search ride height here). Look for inside edge tire wear also.
2001 is pretty old now and should be cheap, but I think you can probably find a 2004+ car for not much more and they are more tolerant to short trips and less perfect oil change frequency than the older cars, as 2004's were the first to come with a working pcv system from the factory. There was a 2005 wagon not far from here that sold for $1k (needed some work)! The going rate for a 2004/05 is around $4-5k for a wagon, less for a sedan (like $2-4k). 2001 is mostly about $1.5-3k I would say. All these cars are a smoking bargain if you can fix the PO's buildup of issues.
Bender, do you still have the viggen?
