Until 2007 I had a 2000 Aero on which I accumulated 185K miles. Subsequently, I replaced this with a 2007 9-5 Aero on which I have accumulated 95K miles to-date.
I used to go up to MA and ME every other week regardless of the weather. I always used Michelin snow tires (NOT all season). Currently, I'm using 215-55-16 Michelin Alpine Pilots. They work very well in the snow, packed or loose.
In my case a tire width that worked in the snow and performed well at higher speeds on dry pavement were requirements....hence the need to stick with the recommended snow tire size and not get too radical.
I would carefully research the load rating, and suitability of using a skinnier tire without changing to an appropriate rim width.
Also, note that snow tire performance (in the snow) diminishes once the tread depth gets below 5-6 mm. My approach has always been to install the pair with the greatest tread depth on the front; yes, I know that some of you may disagree with that strategy.
