Hi - interested to hear from others, just how common it is to have the brace between the motor and the catalytic converter break?
New-to me 2006 SC, 94K miles. Driving it home (70 miles) I noted a sometimes clunk/click through the steering wheel upon acceleration/deceleration. Didn't notice it during test drive. I figured it might be a dry steering wheel spline. Car is up on jackstands now, I have the front subframe out, and in the process I found another possible cause for the noise/feel. The brace or stay that connects the cat to the motor has broken at the bend where it bolts to the motor via the same bolt that anchors the turbo. Discovered this as I lowered the exhaust.
Anyone else experience this? It is at a bend in the part, which could be a stress point, but it's pretty sturdy. This is Minnesota, there is corrosion at the break, and stress plus salt plus vibration might have done this. Don't know if I would have found it if not removing exhaust from turbo.
Of course it is an uncommon maintenance item, and as a real SAAB part it's about $6 - plus $10 to $15 for the postage.
I will post when the car is back on the road to update on whether greasing steering wheel splined joint and replacing this brace cure the symptom.
