Rear Subframe Bushing Replacement w/o Dropping Exhaust?

Question: Can I replace just the rear bushings on my 1999 SE 2.3lpt without dropping the exhaust?
Digging up an old thread topic for this one key clarification. This car has over 220K miles. I've kept it pretty well since we first got it 100K ago. Refreshed the suspension thoroughly at about 170K - EXCEPT I never did anything about subframe bushings.
Now the car has definitely got bad rear bushings in the subframe. This '99 is in its 'golden years' - but the slighty vague handling is an issue I don't want to live with, and the subframe appears to be the culprit.
I just dropped the subframe on one of our 2006's, but that is a new-to-me car, and I used the opportunity to do other things (oil pan, alternator regulator/brushes, motor mounts). Dropping the exhaust and subframe totally on the 1999 is not something that I want to do, and the exhaust might not take the racket. I have the "Rosebush" tool for SAAB/Vauxhall and it worked great for replacing the bushings on the 2006 with the subframe out of the car. I think there is enough room if I can drop the rear of the 1999 subframe about 1.5 to 1.75 inches. I won't be doing the center bushings.
Anders (or others) if you do only rear bushings, can you get by WITHOUT DROPPING the exhaust? Though I understand the motor balances well on its side mounts, I will be using my engine support bar as I did when I dropped the subframe fully on the 20016.
Thanks for any input on this,
