I find a once per year (time-based) change is the minimum based on olfactory requirements. In my case, the filters are generally contaminated with fine road, exhaust and tire contaminants from the pollution plume that vehicles are constantly driving through but little in the way of leaf debris and such. Except for the summer, the ACC is programmed to default to NO AC mode to save energy (although it's periodically run to exercise and lubricate the system)so residual humidity not normally an issue. When changing over, I spray a bit of Benefect inside the housing and on the filter to retard the growth of microorganisms over and beyond what may otherwise be added during the mfg process.
