Oil leak after engine replacement (long)

I just replaced the engine in my 03 9-5 (low end knock of death). The replacement engine is an 01 that supposedly only has 63k miles. The replacement went smooth and the engine fired up after only a few cranks. We were hearing some top end clicking so we ended up using some break-in oil. I drove the car home (about 20 miles) with the engine running very smooth. When I got home, there was a lot of smoke and burning oil smell and the underside of the car was dripping wet. After cleaning, I found that the oil was leaking from the back left corner of the oil pan (where it meets up with the trans.). I could see some small cracks in the pan around that area, so I replaced the pan. It's still leaking from the same spot and seems to be coming from between the engine and transmission. It looks like a rear main seal leaking, but they supposedly never leak unless there's excessive crankcase pressure. The engine has the PCV6 update that I switched from my old engine, but I don't know how to tell if it's working properly. I've also read about stuck piston rings causing excessive pressure. I guess I don't understand how the motor could run so well with stuck rings. Is there anything else I'm missing?
Thanks
