Bought two 2006 9-5 Sport Combi's in space of three months. Because of my limited time and need to maintain my own vehicle, I did most everything to one of the two SC's, but figured the other could wait until this July-August for suspension refresh and other preventive work.
That means the ATF drain-fill X 4 that I had planned didn't happen right away. This past week my daughter complained of poor acceleration - hard time getting up to speed on freeway on ramp. No codes. So I searched a lot, with a number of posts on heat related hesitation - here in Minnesota it's just gotten hot the last two weeks.
Today she brought the car home, and I confirmed that the car did behave strangely. Punching the pedal from 35 or 40 mph resulted in immediate boost and revs, but the transmission didn't readily kick down, so the car gained speed slowly compared to expectations. I decided to begin the ATF change (Toyota Type IV ATF). I don't know why, but until then, I had not checked the ATF level. The car was off, but the fluid level was over the top of the plastic on the dipstick.
I drained fluid using only the drain plug, and I got over five quarts out! Though I have seen worse, the drained fluid clearly needed changing. I refilled with 3.5 quarts, then lowered the car, left it running and measured and added fluid until in the middle of the marks. I took the car back on the road and now the transmission kicked down nicely, as hoped. I need to do this three more times to finish the flush.
This put real tangible experience to instructions from Swedecar and others that the Aisin Warner boxes should NOT be overfilled. I think only cooler than normal weather this past month masked the issue. Hopefully we haven't done any lasting damage to the transmission.
Hope this helps others with poor acceleration and no codes - check ATF level & don't overfill.
