Yes its easy to support the engine with a jack and piece of wood under the oil pan. Other approaches are valid too.
That motor mount tends to compress (vs disintegrate or tear) and as such I'd be surprised if it were the cause of your clunk. In fact if you suspect it's that bad open the hood and watch the engine while a friend cycles from D to R (with engine running). If the clunk is a motor mount you will see hear and feel the clunk.
agree with others that its best to replace all motor mounts at once but understand the desire to save money.
does the clunk happen only when starting from a dead stop? ever a clunk over bumps etc?
