I suppose I got a bum center pulley

Hi folks,
I have been on the short-belt option for a few weeks, while waiting to receive and then install a replacement center idler pulley for my 2002 Aero. Well, I installed it yesterday morning and--damm*t--the high whir (rising with engine speed) was back. Evidently this brand-new pulley is as noisy as the one I removed. It doesn't *look* like it's been fiddled with (say, repacked bearings) and in the hand spins very smoothly, like fresh sealed bearings are supposed to do.
I've asked the vendor (v well-known; rhymes with BlobBlight) for a return authorization, but in the meantime, could it be at all that I'm missing something? (I absolutely know I installed the pulley correctly, backing plate oriented the right way, etc.) Back to the short-belt for a bit...
