Just FYI, when I originally got my new-to-me CPO '01 Aero, the problem surfaced the first Fall after I had purchased the car.
Warranty coveage, so back then no reluctance on the part of the dealer to spend some time looking into the issue. The master tech couldn't find anything wrong, but suggested replacing the CPS as a possible "cure." He did so, and it made no real difference the next day when I again tried to start in the morning after a cool night - exact same behavior.
On the advice of the service manager (he prefaced the suggestion by saying something like, "I know it sounds screwy, but just try it..." I ran out the tank of gas until the idiot light came on and then filled up with the high-test Sunoco, and parked the car overnight. No significant change in the overnight temps, throughout. End of problem - and it never came back. (I had been using Mobil fuel)
As I mentioned, the decent Sunoco stations around me have all closed except for one very expensive one, so I tend not to bother with any of this these days, and just chuckle to myself when I can successfully predict the number of "stumbles" by checking what the low temp was the previous night.
