Round Wire Lock Rings - Replace? Posted by DnstrDan [Email] (#1361) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DnstrDan) on Sat, 17 Oct 2015 09:57:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Getting ready to reinstall both CV axle inner drivers onto my '99 SE. The WIS specifies use of a new circlip on the spline prior to installation. This lock ring (round wire retaining ring, no ears), SAAB p/n 4686929, is not perfectly circular, but has each end bent slightly inward. When installed, part of the ring protrudes from the circumferential spline groove.
Absent a new part, how does one disposition whether the ring has been "excessively" deformed upon removal? (I used a 5# slide hammer and it took dozens of whacks to free each companion shaft spline.) All generic photos of this kind of round wire lock ring appear as a perfect circle. Mechanically, it seems to me that the ends would need to be bent inwards a bit to provide for a sprung fit inside the mating notch of the bore.
If I had to do it again, I'd have ordered spare rings before starting this job. I don't want to wait another week, yet I don't want a retention that is either too loose because the ring sits too low, or risk jamming the ring in the bore groove because it sits too high.
