Is it cold where you are now? Wipe off all the anaerobic sealant. Yes, clean the groove in the VC - not perfect, but 'pretty good'. Now get a hair dryer (if it's not your own, ask first - I bought a cheapie just for the garage). Lay the VC upside down and attempt to lay the gasket into the VC - where it resists, heat with hairdryer, then hold it in place while it cools.
Once it conforms to what you want, then use your anaerobic sealant lightly. You may also use small zip ties or dental floss through all the bolt holes to hold the gasket in place while you guide it down onto the head. Use a mirror to see that you don't get the gasket outside the groove in the back where it is hard to reach and see. Once in place, don't allow it to lift at all - remove the dental floss or cut the zip ties. Confirm that you have not let the gasket escape its groove. I suggest a mirror because I pinched & ruined a new valve cover gasket that way some years back the first time I did this.
