More tensioner woes - installing new

Hurdle at the final step of changing the tensioner ......
So I got the new tensioner and belt in this morning BUT when I go to release the tension on the new unit, because it is so far forward now there is not enough space to pull it FURTHER forward.
Therefore I cannot provide enough slack to pull out the pin.
I must be some kind of idiot but it is in correctly and I just cannot see how to do it.
Please give me a clue here.
