That November thread is correct, but you may need your mirror to really get a grasp of how it works. It is a locking ring that has tabs which stick out so that you can get leverage to twist it. It engages at the front of the igniter base of the bulb. You have to reach to the front of that square igniter and twist the ring using the tabs that sit at an oblique angle.
I just did this on one daughter's '06 and used the driver's side to learn on (there's more space for the mirror, with the battery out). Her lights were both working, but one was quite blue violet compared to the other, so I was pretty sure one was a lot older than the other - a failure waiting to happen when she wouldn't be able to fix it. I'd rather have the halogens in this car, but buying used . . .
