One thing to keep in mind is that it is less and less about what's good for your engine compared to what's good for the posted gas mileage when the cars are certified.
More and more modern engines are recommended to use 0W-20 or 5W-20 but if that is wise for longevity we will see.
I have used 15W-40 Delo 400 in all Volvo engines since I started and have not seen a rash of engine failures or catalytic converter failures but I think I have saved many engines due to that many and most drivers do not check and top off oil in these modern high consumption engines that are now produced.
The same oil has been used in all pre 99 Saab's. All 99 and up gets the 5W-40 full synthetic unless they consume a lot of oil where I switch to the 15W-40 in those as well.
