I have a 2002 Saab 9-5 Linear with 198,000 kms 5AT transmission. My wife was driving the car close to home and noticed that the car was not shifting smoothly while driving. Subsequently, a CEL was triggered along with the transmission warning light. The car then went into Limp Home Mode but she was able to get home slowly. Upon checking it with my OBDII reader, I got a P0780 - Shift Malfunction error.
Today, I reset the CEL code with my OBD reader and the CEL and transmission warning lights were cleared. I took the car for a short drive and observed the following:
- Upon acceleration, the transmission shifted normally and relatively smoothly.
- When decelerating to a stop sign or speed bump, I noticed a pronounced "jerky" downshift of the car.
- Shifting from reverse to drive felt a little "clunky".
- I drove for about 15 minutes and other than the "jerky" downshift, the car seem to drive normally. No extraordinary sound was noticed.
I scanned the net and this site but could not find very much info. Potential issues raised by others were the automatic transmission shifter solenoid or solenoid valve or the transmission itself.
Any info is greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Simon
