You might use a pressure test kit - often available on a buy-but-return-for-credit basis at parts stores. If you have a leak, this will tell you. And if it's localized where you think, then it will show you where the leak is - if it's below the liquid line. Otherwise, squirting a little soapy water around the coolant tank would create bubbles to help you spot a crack in it or a hose.
You can probably do something similar with a bicycle pump and use your old cap as the DIY adapter. Don't go crazy with the pressure.
