If the headgasket fit on top of the two dowel rings, I can't even begin to understand why the head wouldn't do the same.
If the head is all the way over the timing chain and guides and wiggling on top of the dowel rings, it is just a matter of moving it around slightly until it drops down.
Look down the headbolt holes and see which way you need to move it.
