Might not be the cause, but worth checking . . . Be sure to re-check the oil pressure sender (above and behind the starter). if your son's car is leaking from the pressure switch onto the exhaust, it could give these symptoms. At cruise the oil will burn off and the smoke will be swept away, but coming off the freeway the exhaust will be hot, and there won't be much breeze to distribute the smoke. As engine revs drop, so does oil pressure and the leak slows. These switches don't all leak at a nice constant rate, and they don't necessarily stop working just because they leak.
A leaking oil line to the turbo could give a similar scenario - and because turbo and exhaust are so hot, there's not a lot of evidence by the time a person can look under the hood. The sniff test while the cars idles for cool down is a good idea.
Good luck on this quest.
