Improving the bass in the stock Harman Kardon AS3 system is NOT easy.
I'm now in a different 9-5 and added a powered subwoofer (the JBL GT-BassPro 12). I tried the "easy button," drawing power from the trailer harness and splicing the speaker level input from the rear deck speakers. The result--lots of low bass that threw the whole system out of balance. Plus, I was getting serious pulsing after turning the key off when I tried to adjust the sub's crossover upwards (there are ways to address that, but they all involve more intensive rewiring that I had no interest in doing).
Since I already had cut the wires to the rear deck speakers, I figured I'd replace the now 12-years-old factory speakers. I couldn't find my preferred Infinity brand for less than $100, so I went with the Pioneer TS-A series 6x9s, which scored well in comparative loudness (see http://car-speakers-review.toptenreviews.com/). Pioneer specs bass extension down to 28Hz, but on the box is response curve suggesting that is quite generous and minus more than 10dB! I replaced one and spent a long time listening to music moving between the two sides. The result--very, very close! The factory speakers seemed to have more impact, but the Pioneers seemed a little more taught, less mushy. Just as with my last attempt with the Infinity Kappas, it's proven to be a very minor "upgrade."
Hence my conclusion that you can do A LOT worse than the factory rear deck speakers (unless they're blown, of course). Finding a true upgrade that drops into the rest of the factory system is still elusive. The absolute best upgrade I've found is adding an aux input via the Saab Aux Cd Connect device (http://www.saabaux.com/).
