If shocks are original they surely need to be replaced, but you could invest in that and still have a "clunk".
As far as the source of the "clunk", I'd check the sway bar bushings and links. both are likely to clunk at that mileage if original. both are inexpensive and easy to replace.
also likely to "clunk" are worn subframe bushings, and they are bit more expensive to replace.
Unfortunately at that age and mileage much of the suspension components are nearing the end of their life.
