who sells cars for $50 apiece - I think scrap yards will haul away a car and give you around $500 for it.
if the engines can still turn over you could remove the spark plugs and do a compression test, if the timing belt is already broken you might hear some metallic sounds. Otherwise removing cam covers and turning crankshaft by hand could reveal what you need to know about the top end, if the belt is already broken no need to turn anything.
