Given how difficult it is to install, I would not keep around an old alt. unless it is just perfect. Replacements are just too inexpensive and represent a tiny factor in all the "costs" of installing a new alt. in an existing 9-5. If I was doing an engine transplant I would replace the alt with new while the access is easiest.
I would look around for inexpensive storage. The best way to keep parts on hand as spares is a car that's together.
