I've done it and I didnt have a mishap. I wouldnt say its "safe" and I probably would not recommend it.
But I would definitely not do it to circulate the trans oil. Seems to me you want to work the trans a bit, under load, through the gears.
Do as saabsince93b (and the rest of us) do ... and drive it between flushes.
