Bilstein HD (B6) dead at 65K miles; Replace w. what ? Posted by Mark in Marine [Email] (#1837) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Mark in Marine) on Wed, 13 Jul 2016 20:27:02 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
1999 SE 2.3lpt w. 227K miles. Right rear Bilstein HD shock (B6) has lost all pressure and will not self-extend - no fluid leak. I couldn't tell for sure until I removed the shock/spring assembly and compressed the spring. Haven't removed and tested the left side.
Trying to decide: 1) ask Bilstein for warranty replacement. I doubt I can remove the nut without cutting or heating or holding the piston shaft in a destructive way. Then there is shipping, and I don't know whether Bilstein will insist on a receipt. I don't have that, but I have my maintenance records. Other options: 2) New Bilstein HD's (ca. $200 - $225 / pair). 3) Sachs OEM (ca. $160 / pair). 4) Monroe (ca. $120 / pair).
Anyone who's done a warranty replacement from Bilstein please comment on how difficult the process was? I'd appreciate the information.
Thanks !

P.S. Because shocks had <60K on them I suspected front subframe bushings first for unsettled handling - but they were incredibly good for 227K. Driving effects from bad shock were sort of subtle - only at speed over big bumps.
