The last year for a genuine "Linear" wagon in the USA is M.Y. 2005.
If this is a 2006 9-5, call it a base model but it is most roughly equivalent to the 2004 and 2005 Arcs in terms of trim, motors, available options.
Wagons are quite a bit harder to find, but what I do is buy 2004 and newer 9-5s off the used lots of premium marque dealers (like Acura, Mercedes). They will just send away any trade-in they cannot pass through their inspections and who buys those that fail? Dealers like the guy you're talking to.
In 2015 I picked up an 2006 wagon, base model with no options really, from a Mercedes dealer in Alexandria, VA and when the battery went out shortly thereafter they cheerfully replaced it no charge.
I feel these premium dealerships consider used older cars like these not to be a source of profit, but almost a nuisance. They may ask a higher amount but you offer 'em $ 3,500 less and they accept the offer. The sales price ends up being lower than some place who feels duty bound to make a profit off of a ten year old Saab. A few months later I bought a 2004 Aero sedan, 52,000 miles, Acura dealer, and they accepted an offer of just a little more than half of their stated price. And they did things to sweeten up the car that the scrappy guys would just never do.
I'd keep looking. There's so many available; no need to deal with unreliable outfits IMO.
