<2003 easy, >2003 pita Posted by Snowmobile [Email] (#686) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Snowmobile) on Fri, 21 Oct 2016 10:13:51 In Reply to: Source for Transponder Key?, Jon Fero, Thu, 20 Oct 2016 10:36:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
or at least it used to be so. According to the key faq, sometime in late 2003, they changed the shaft on the key. The old shaft is available as key blanks with and without transponder guts from ilco directly and many good automotive locksmiths can procure and cut that key (need the right laser cutting machine: need to be able to cut sidewinders for >2003 anyway). Programming is required (to clone an embedded key transponder), but may be different than tech2 programming, so might be done at the locksmith. The Ilco key blank is probably cheaper than the saab one. So it should be no big deal for your 2002.
if you own a 2004 (maybe later model year 2003's also?) the key shaft is thicker, and as of about 3-4 years ago, there was no aftermarket supply of the appropriate shaft... I wanted a simple key with no electronics at the time (so it could be submerged in water) to be able to open the door only (or maybe click to some guts to drive also, but mainly to get into the car)... was not feasible at the time...
Fortunately that seems to have changed! It seems ilco does now make key shafts for the later model years also, eg:

I should get one cut! heck, the blank only costs $1.50!
But anyway, looking on eeuroparts, you can get blanks, guts, back covers, and cut keys, and kits of cut key + guts + back etc in stock for all years... prices are reasonable considering the complexity of the keys. You will save $$ by purchasing the guts used, but otherwise it is no big deal. This is true for both <2003 and >2003 now. If you don't want the integrated remote key, but would rather just the mechanical key with transponder, the options like Ilco might be the best bet. I actually prefer the integrated remote key, except for the fact that it can't be safely submerged in salt water (but neither can a transponder key)...
Here is an example afternarket transponder key for <2003:

hope that helps!
