This was back when the correct part WAS still available for my 2000 but somehow I ordered the 2001-> version by mistake. No return policy (maybe it was an eBay seller) so I used my Dremmel to carve the tri-cornered circular hole. Worked great and lasted the life of the car, or at least until I sold it years later.
The housing is nasty FRP, made a big mess grinding it away. Are you sure the socket itself is not available as a service part? I had to replace one of those too due to the same corrosion you mentioned. Only a 1 ft pigtail IIRC.
EDIT: It appears the cornering light socket pigtail is NLA. A "no tools required" removal from a junkyard vehicle.
