As a follow up, I just replaced my xenon bulbs this weekend while I had the bumper cover off for other business. I took the headlight fixtures off the car to more easily handle the replacement. I noticed that the driver's side lock ring that holds the bulb in was in the "closed" position but the bulb was not locked in, I just pulled it out. I also noticed that a few of the pressure "prongs" that hold the bulb in position were missing/bent out of shape, and I had to use a very fine screwdriver to bend a few back in place in order to get the lock ring to "open" position. I guess someone had trouble figuring out how to replace these in the last go around.
Also, when I pulled the bulb out, the long "arm" that goes from the bottom of the glass bulb outside and then links to the top was broken--so I suspect that my light flickering had something to do with both of these things.
Only time will tell, now... gotta get some more night miles on the car to really know.
