Bad seat heater switch?

I've only had my 2004 Arc wagon for about a thousand miles/two months now, and it's been all around great. Looking for something to tinker with, I decided to try and replace what I thought were the burnt out bulbs on the driver seat heater switch. So I snagged a handful of bulbs at the junkyard (filaments intact), along with an entire extra switch assembly from a 1999 9-5.
I put in the replacement bulbs just now, but without any luck. I checked the original bulbs, and their filaments also appeared intact. I put the originals back in, and for a brief moment, one of the original bulbs lit up. By the time I'd put the switch back in, the light was out.
I'm wondering now if the switch itself is bad. The more I think about it, I'm not even sure the seat heater seems to be working. I had a Passat before this, and the seat heater was by far the best feature of that car. How's the 9-5's seat heater--is it traditionally underwhelming, or am I missing out on toasty buns? I sometimes feel something vaguely akin to warmth on my backside, but that may just be wishful sitting. If I do need a new switch, what years will work? The switch from the '99 does not appear to have the same prongs on the back as the original switch.
Thanks!
