My 05 Aero is the same.
I agree with what saabsince 93b said. In my opinion, it's just the clearcoat. I have a little on hood and some on roof. No appearance of damage to metal, just clear coat covering.
I'm planning on trying to apply a new clear coat over the area. We'll see what happens.
