I have the same yr/model. The factory unit is not too bad, generally, I can find where each of the contiguous states are located (just kidding). My experience has been that only the newer roads present a problem and for that, I use "maps" on my phone.
I've thought about looking in the pick n pull for a late model GM vehicle to see if I can find a map CD. Somewhere on the internet, I read (or imagined) that the caddy or vet mapping CDs will work. Haven't actually tested that theory.
Some things I found interesting, as compared to Google Maps (via smartphone) or portable GPS receiver is that the vehicle still accurately tracks in tunnels. It also locks on faster and doesn't loose the signal in cities (around tall buildings).
Replacing the entire unit might prove problematic.
