Electrical Components Deliberately Programmed to Fail

Talking with a friend that is an electrical engineer
for an automotive company that supplies various
electrical/computer components to just about every
automotive company in the world including SAAB/GM.
He made an interesting comment that I had not given
much thought to, but makes sense, and obviously
would be unethical. He stated that manufactures
and their suppliers can actually program
electrical/computer parts to fail at given
intervals, 30k, 40, 60k etc.(or after the warranty expires).
He stated, obviously there are other issues
such as poor design, workmanship or quality
defects that can cause premature failure,
but the fact is, failure can be deliberately
programmed into various parts.
I’m not making any accusations, but the thought
is a bit scary isn’t it.
Any engineers out there care to comment.
Thanks in advance for your input.
