Having a piece of dimensional timber (about 3 feet) is real useful to prop the hatch open to R + R the struts hidden above the headliner. Get the length just so and it makes R + R much easier. You're trying to match the timber length so there's no load on the connection points for the struts - nail that and they'll pop right off, I found.
The hatch is way heavier than the hood and if the wood slips, the hatch will slam down with a lot of force - I wouldn't put it off too long. Also, you gotta watch for bad struts leaking fluid onto your nice headliner. Maybe the worst part of R + R of those plastic trim parts is how brittle they may be in very cold weather.
