Good thought, but I did not try a BBA rebuild - it's my daughter's car, and I could not remove and leave the dash apart while I waited. Didn't want to do the removal twice, so I went for a new part to replace the 10 year old one.
Depending on what's wrong, the 'rebuild' COULD be a DIY. I've seen a couple of folks report on other boards that they only needed a new speaker to be soldered in, but sourcing the correct size & impedance (plus robustness) would have consumed more time than I had - and I would have had to confirm the problem was only the speaker. My upside is that I have two daughters with the almost same car, and if #2 fails I can rebuild the old one that I removed from car #1 (then I'd need a Tech2 to reprogram).
